Project Name: Big Bay / Small Bay Coastal Revetment
Company: City of Cape Town
Country: South Africa
Category: Construction, Engineering, and Infrastructure
Project description: For over 30 years, a 200 metre stretch of coastline in Cape Town was defended by an old gabion wall. A major storm event in 2017 caused the structure to fail, resulting in the imminent collapse of the entire embankment, a public walkway, a municipal sewer and the local life-saving building. The City of Cape Town successfully constructed a new coastal defense structure (geo-container revetment), taking into account significant time and budget constraints as well as challenging site characteristics such as working in a very dynamic tidal zone, ongoing beach erosion, a sensitive marine environment and a very limited construction footprint.
